What is Reverse Engineering?
Reverse Engineering is a term used to describe the process of re-constructing an existing product accurately, for the purpose of manufacturing more of the same kind or modifying it to improve upon its design.
In mechanical engineering, reverse engineering is an integrated domain that helps us to bring out technological and physical principles of any mechanical part or component by undergoing the analysis procedure of some of its basic aspects such as structure, function and operation. Certain reasons why people have to go for the RE operations are, most of the time: lack of the documentation, to fix some or more of the bugs, to improvise, no manufacturing of the product anymore, commercial espionage, duplication and many more.
Reverse Engineering is an activity that comprises of creating the complete 3D virtual models of the existing physical models of the subjects in concern. There are two methods to generate the 3D models of any subject which are manual methodology and mechanical Methodology.
Often companies have the requirements for CAD Drawings of an existing part.
This can be due to:
- No Drawings exist only the tooling to make the part
- Drawings are very old
- The Supplier makes the part and has and will not provide the drawings
In these cases it is possible to measure the existing part by:
- 3D Scanning
- Hand measurements – recreating 3D CAD Models from existing parts
Following this, new 3D CAD models can be created and from this the subsequent 2D Drawings.
What Reverse Engineering Services does A1 CAD Solutions offer?
At A1 CAD Solutions we are regularly receiving parts that do not have drawings. Depending on the accuracy required we either measure or scan the parts to create new drawings. After the new CAD model has been created, modifications can also be implemented. Our drawings will be in accordance with the applicable South African National Standard to enable our client to send the drawings to be understood fully by any Manufacturers. The main methods comprises of:
- Manual Methodology
This method includes the complete disassembly of the subject and then measurements are taken with every accurate tool such as Vernier, micrometre or thread pitch gauge. All the dimensions are recorded on a rough estimated sketch of the individual components of the subject which is followed by the 3D modelling of the components in Pro-E.
- Mechanical Methodology
This method includes the regeneration of a full CAD model of a given mechanical part from a 3D point cloud. The 3D point cloud is made available by 3D scanners or by the results of FEM approaches.
